How Can Schools Be More Equitable?

As a future teacher, I have the opportunity to make schools more equitable. The term equity refers to fairness and justice. Equity is recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and as teachers, we must acknowledge and make adjustments for our students.

There are a few different ways that I believe will help promote equity in schools but there is one change that I believe will have the most impact. That change is to increase staff training. I believe that providing staff training about equity will help students in more ways than you could think of. The conversation around racial equity can be a difficult subject but it needs to be discussed more in schools around the world. By providing staff with training it will help teachers learn strategies to participate in these hard conversations with their students.

Another change that I believe will help make schools more equitable is by establishing an inclusive environment. As a future teacher, I want to be able to create an inclusive space for my future students. I want my students to feel comfortable expressing themselves. In my future classroom personal attacks, and hostile interactions will not be tolerated under any circumstance. It is very important to me that I provide for my future students by giving them access to an inclusive environment.
