How Does Gender Affect the Teaching Profession?
Growing up I have heard several gender stereotypes about teachers and the traditional social norms and stereotypes that can lead to gender discrimination in education. I also have heard the countless amount of judgments made towards the teaching profession and why people think that gender affects the teaching profession.
I have had so many people judge me for wanting to pursue teaching. I always get told "teachers don't make enough" and "that sounds fun". I do not think that teachers are valued enough for what they do. Teachers do so much and they deserve to be treated equally.
As a future educator, I know that because I am a woman I will be affected by gender discrimination in education. It is a well-known fact that women have always been mistreated in the workforce. Women also do not get the same pay, opportunities, or respect that most men do as educators. Overall Gender does affect the teaching profession but I believe that there is hope for equality.
Hello Cameron,
ReplyDeleteI too have heard countless comments about the teaching profession. My parents were upset I wanted to major in Education becuase they felt like I wouldn't be able to support myself with the kind of salary they tend to make. I remember telling other people about my major and receiving responses like, "Wow, but these kids these days are so disrespectful." I feel like everyone has a preconceived notion of the job as a whole. When it comes to gender, I would say women have come a long way compared to where they stood in the 18000's. There are still some wage gaps that need fixing and the field is still predominantly occupied by females, but acknowledging these sorts of problems/stats is a start to getting them addressed and hopefully fixed soon.
Hi Cameron,
ReplyDeleteI agree I grew up in a household where I was constantly questioned for my career choice decisions. Till this day they still ask why and it's so upsetting how little teachers are respected especially as females. its hard to work in a world where gender will always be the first thing they notice.
Hi Cameron,
ReplyDeleteI have also heard a lot about the teaching profession also. When I first came to TXST I was under a different major because I had let other people get into my head and talk me out of teaching but I changed it back to education and I'm so happy I did!
